I took a back road
when I saw you
I wanted to hide
behind a jar of chocolate spread
and the sprinkles, with
plate and knife and the newspaper
until you couldn’t see me,
I looked for a back road
close to you; running away
no longer made sense
I rang the bell, while
the coffee went cold
I felt its heartbeat
everything moved, everything trembled
hidden behind a bowl
of granola and yoghurt, and me,
I looked for a back road,
mouth to mouth, I wanted
to bring you back to my life
and because it failed,
by way of the main road,
I took a shortcut
fast food, like a slice of pizza
I gulped you down and choked
because you forgot me,
trying to break us free
